Usually, this results in moderate to significant swelling at the site of the sting without further complaints. Such a reaction is unpleasant but almost never dangerous. However, about one in a hundred people may experience a severe allergic reaction. The allergic reaction occurs because venom spreads through your body, and your immune system cannot process it properly.
Anyone can develop an allergy to wasp or bee venom. The risk of becoming allergic increases the more often you are stung or if you are stung multiple times in a short period.
With this package, you test sIgE against the most common allergens in insect stings.
If you experience a (severe) allergic reaction, you may have complaints involving multiple organs, such as the skin, gastrointestinal tract, lungs, central nervous system, heart, and blood vessels, in addition to local reactions.
A general characteristic of allergy testing is that the sIgE test can sometimes be positive even in the absence of allergic complaints. In such cases, there is no allergy. We, therefore, advise against testing for allergies without experiencing symptoms.
You collect a blood sample at home with a simple finger prick. Then, you send the sample by mail to our laboratory, where it is reliably tested. If you are allergic, the blood test will show that specific IgE antibodies are being produced in your blood against the allergens to which you are allergic.
The blood test result is presented as a positive or negative test result and explained with the measured concentration. The concentration of sIgE does not predict the severity of the allergic reaction. However, the more sIgE present, the greater the likelihood of an allergic reaction to the tested allergen. An elevated concentration of antibodies combined with allergic symptoms strongly indicates an allergy.
It may also happen that the value is elevated without any symptoms indicating an allergy.
We recommend consulting a (general) physician for a definitive diagnosis and possible treatment of your symptoms if there is an elevated concentration of sIgE combined with symptoms consistent with an allergy.
You will receive a mailbox package containing all the materials needed to easily collect blood via a finger prick.
We use a unique preservation fluid that conserves your blood, allowing it to be sent by regular mail.
After the blood is received at the laboratory, the test result is usually available within 10 working days. You will receive a notification enabling you to view and download the test result online. The test results are accompanied by a clear explanation and recommendations.
