What is Herpes? HSV-1 & HSV-2

The Difference:

• Location of Infection:
  HSV-1 typically causes oral herpes (cold sores around the mouth/lips) but can also cause genital herpes. HSV-2 is more commonly associated with genital herpes but can occur orally through oral sex.
• Transmission:
  HSV-1 often spreads through saliva and direct contact (e.g., kissing). HSV-2 is primarily sexually transmitted through contact with infected skin or mucous membranes.
• Symptoms:
  Both can cause painful blisters/sores. The first outbreak is often the most severe; later recurrences are milder. HSV-2 tends to cause more frequent genital outbreaks.
• Latency:
  Both remain latent for life and can reactivate, for example, during periods of reduced immunity.

Instructions for Use

1. Remove the outer packaging and place the test cassette on a flat surface with the sample window facing up.
2. Use the included lancet to obtain a few drops of finger blood.
3. Use the pipette to collect 3 drops of blood (approximately 80–100 µl) and apply it vertically into the sample opening of the cassette. Avoid air bubbles. Use a new pipette for each test.
4. Add 1 drop of the reagent into the designated opening.
5. Read the result after 10 minutes.

Symptoms

Many people carry herpes without (clear) symptoms and can unknowingly transmit it. Possible symptoms include:

• Painful blisters or sores (oral or genital), burning/tingling sensation beforehand.
• Pain during urination, itching, redness, or swelling.
