What is trichomonas?

Trichomonas, or trichomoniasis, is a sexually transmitted disease caused by a parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. Women have more symptoms than men, but it is not a dangerous STD and it is rare in the Netherlands. Moreover, it is easy to treat. With trichomonas it is possible that you have no symptoms, but are still positive. That is why it is important to test yourself regularly.

How do you get trichomonas?

Trichomonas is an STD caused by a parasite. This parasite can be transmitted when you have unprotected sexual contact with an infected partner. Trichomonas is found in the penis and in the vagina. The incubation period of trichomonas is 5 to 28 days. Trichomonas often occurs in combination with other sexually transmitted diseases such as chlamydia or gonorrhea.

What are the symptoms of trichomonas?

Usually you don't notice much of trichomonas. Then you have no symptoms. However, this does not mean that you are not contagious, so you can unconsciously pass it on to someone else. Women do have more complaints than men.
